Prostate Cancer PSA Test

PSA stands for prostate specific antigen, it’s a chemical produced by your prostate cells. Under normal circumstances a small amount of PSA will register in your bloodstream.

If you have cancer your levels will be higher, I want to point out that it is possible to have cancer and have normal levels of PSA. It is vitally important that you have both tests done a digital rectal examination (DRE) and a PSA. The American Urological Association recommends starting prostate screening at the age of 50.

Although if you are at high risk such as listed below they suggest the age of 40

  1. African American men
  2. Men with a family history of prostate cancer
  3. Men who develop persistent urinary symptoms
