Prostate Treatment Options

If you find out that indeed you have cancer then first of all I’m sorry, the road you are about to take is not easy but there is hope and it is normal to be depressed once your hear the news.

SECOND it is not a death sentence, men go on to have fulfilling lives, it’s going to be an adjustment and the sooner you come to terms and become proactive the better off you will be. As far as treatments go you have to determine if you want to cure the cancer or slow it down and treat it symptoms.

Remember not all treatment is right for each person some depend on the severity of the cancer and each procedure comes with its on risks. You should fully investigate each option to determine your course of action.

Surgery is generally performed to cure cancer, listed are the surgical procedures…

Radical Prostatectomy – removal of the prostate.

External Beam Radiation Therapy – radiation that goes through the skin focused on a target organ such as the prostate to kill cancer cells.

Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy – removal of the entire prostate, including the seminal vesicles, and part of the vas deferens (the tube that connects the urethra and the testicles) using a laparoscope.

Brachytherapy – minimally evasive and requires a single treatment, the procedure places radioactive seeds into the prostate.

Cyrotherapy – liquid nitrogen is sent through probes to freeze and kill cancer cells.

To slow down the growth of cancer

Hormone Therapy – using pills, shots and a method call bilateral orchiectomy which is the removal of both testicles. By the removing the effects of testosterone on the prostate cancer these therapies help to shrink the cancer and possibly slow its growth.

Radiation Therapy – radioactive beams or implants to kill cancer cells.
